In 1987,Mani (V.S.S. Mani), who belonged to a pretty normal family, had to drop his CA exams and to add to family income he had to take up a sales job in a directory building company called United Database India (UDI), which was then printing and publishing directory for the

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam. He worked there for two years. While working he realised that a lot of customers over there had complaints and problems like their numbers were printed wrong and the content was incorrect and why should a user look out for a directory and most of the times he wont find it when he needed it. So he and his client, who was also his good friend, thought of making this whole directory thing dynamic and the best idea seemed was to make it available on phone.

In 1989, they started a company called Ask Me. But the first company was much ahead of time. those were the days when people were applying for phone lines and used to wait for years for a connection. So no connectivity meant no calls and that resulted in dry revenues eventually they had to shut this business at that time.

So during 1992-95, to get family income and save money for his dream i.e. JustDial,(a phone directory) he eventually started a wedding planner magazine in association with the times of India.

He landed in Bombay with Rs 50,000 in his pocket with it he had to get an office and a home. But with the help of generous relatives he got a house where he had to pay no deposits and pay just Rs 1500/month and he took up the house and soon got an office in maker chamber where he had to pay Rs 5000 a month for a small room but he settled as it could make a great address on visiting cards because it was near his inspiration, Dhirubhai Ambani`s office.

Then his first need was getting a phone connection, which was not easy then, with a number that could easily be remembered. Soon he narrated his idea to the General Manger of a new telephone exchange where they had this connections starting with three 8’s, who got impressed and helped him get this fabulous 888 8888 88 number. But he couldn`t start it till 1 year due to lack of money. Finally in 1996 he got this company rolling with a keen focus on users and low cost which helped them accelerate their progress.

Usually Hostel + Food + travel + books etc will cost you about Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000 – so over 5 ½ years this would work out to Rs. 3 to 4 lacs over the duration of the course.
Coming to fees – read below.


1. Indian GOVERNMENT Medical Colleges / Universities are the LEAST cost in terms of low budget of Medical Education. All Indians can apply for Admission to Medical Colleges owned by the Center or funded by the Center – for example – BHU, AMU, Jipmer, AIIMS etc. Apart from this all states have 15% seats in the State owned Colleges reserved for the CBSE PMT – which is about 2000 seats.

2. State Govt. Medical Colleges: Low cost. You have to be a domicile of that state & sit for state PMT exam for admission to these colleges.

All Govt. Colleges in India charge fees ranging between Rs. 10,000 p.a. to Rs. 75,000 p.a. so your cost of education is really low – as this is subsidized by the Government or rather by our Tax money.

There are about 15,000 Govt seats on offer per annum and there are 3-400,000 applications. So you have to study very hard to get one of these seats. 


3. Private Medical Colleges / Universities / Deemed Universities – Seats on Merit: Private Colleges are offering their merit seats via an Examination such as Comed K, Manipal Exam, Sikkim Manipal Exam, DY Patil exam etc. 

Each State many have one or more Associations of Private medical and dental colleges who will conduct an exam and admit students on the basis of merit in the exam. Deemed Universities and Private Universities will conduct their own examination. So there is a multiplicity of exams for admission to private colleges in India.

Fees range from Rs. 3 to 5 lacs a year or Rs. 15 to 25 lacs over the duration of the course. 
Add Rs 4 lacs for books / hostel / food etc.

So your cost of education will be Rs. 19 to 29 lacs over 5 ½ years if you get into a Private College on MERIT.


4. NRI Seats / Management quota Seats: These cost about double the merit seats. In addition to the fees the college wants an additional up front payment of Rs. 10 to 20 lacs depending on the College’s location and reputation.

Be prepared to pay between Rs. 30 to 40 lacs for the course (fees only). 

Your cost of life and food etc is extra. So only the rich can afford these seats.


MBBS Overseas 
Low Cost Medical Education Overseas 

There are several destinations outside India you can try for which will be LOWER cost than Private Medical Colleges in India and certainly cheaper than Management quota seats.

1. UKRAINE: You get relatively low cost medical Education in Ukraine. There are 23 Medical Colleges in Ukraine. All owned by Govt. of Ukraine. Fees range from US $ 3000 p.a. to US $ 5000 p.a. (Rs 1.5 to 2.5 lacs pa.) In most Colleges MBBS is in English Medium. Cost of Food and Hostel and books etc will be about Rs. 80,000 to 1 lac p.a. The course takes 5 years and 10 months. 

Total cost of fees + hostel + food + travel + visa etc etc is between Rs. 16 to 20 lacs payable over 5 years and 10 months. It will cost you about Rs. 5.00 lacs in the first year and 2.50 lacs p.a. for the next 5 years to study in Ukraine – approximately. 

Ukraine is part of the European Credit Transfer Scheme – bologna process. So quality of education is high.

Fees are US $ 3000 p.a. or Rs. 1.50 lacs p.a. 
You MBBS here will cost you Rs 9.00 over 6 years for fees. Hostel, food and travel is extra.

2. NEPAL: There are 12 medical colleges approved by the Nepal Medical Council and 1 or 2 new ones coming up in 2009 – 2010. 
3 Colleges are Govt Colleges and seats are reserved for Nepalese citizens (apart from Treaty seats in Govt. Colleges). The 9 private Colleges admit international students from India & other countries. 

Colleges in Kathmandu are expensive and cost about Rs 20 to 26 lacs for Indian Students. 

Medical Colleges on the border cities of India cost less - fees range from Rs. 15 to 20 lacs over 5 years. Food and Hostel in Nepal is low &l costs about Rs. 60,000 p.a. Nepal is close to India and commuting is cheap. Some colleges take the fees up front - some agree to installments. Nepal is MUCH cheaper than Donation seats and on par with the merit seats in Indian private colleges. Many Teachers are Indian. North Indian food is available. Indians do not need a visa or a passport to travel to Nepal. It is highly recommended for Indians.

3. RUSSIA: The Best medical colleges in Russia are in Moscow and St. Petersburg. These are now expensive. Fees are in the range of US $ 6000 to 8000 p.a. for international students and cost of life is high in these two cities – about US $ 400 or Rs. 20,000 per month. So most Indians have stopped going to these two cities. 

Medical College in small cities are lower cost. Fees are in the range of US $ 3000 to 4000 p.a. and cost of life is in the range of Rs 1 to 1.50 lacs p.a.

Please go to the Education section on the Menu and read under the heading “Advisory for Indian Students” Just check up if the college has English medium for all 6 years or not. As in some colleges they have English medium for 3 years and Russian medium for 3 years. Many Indian students have gone to Russia - but the number is dropping of late due to Increasing cost and racial violence.

4. PHILIPPINES: They admit students after 14 years of education. 
The MBBS course takes about 4 years – they call it MD. 
So after class 12 your either go to the Philippines and do a 2 year bachelor degree and then 4 years of MBBS. Or you do 2 years of B.Sc in India and then apply for 4 years of MBBS or MD in Philippines. It will cost you about Rs 20 lacs for 4 years of MBBS there.

5. CHINA: Fees here range from US $ 3000 to 8000 p.a. (1.5 to 4 lacs p.a.) Cost of food and hostel is Rs. 1.00 lac to 1.50 lacs per annum. Though there are over 100 medical colleges in China only 28 of them are approved by Govt. of China to admit international students in English medium course. The number of seats per college is specified - you can find this in the MCI website and I have made a detailed post in this forum. So ensure you go to these 28 approved colleges ONLY or your degree will NOT be recognized anywhere in the world. It will cost you between Rs.16 to 25 lacs to study in China over 6 years. 

6. GERMANY: Education is Free !! in Govt Colleges but you have to study in German Medium. It will take you 8 years to complete the course. 

1 year - learn German in India, 
1 year - learning German in Germany & pass competency language test 6 years -MBBS. 
Cost of life is expensive – it will cost you Rs. 50,000 per month to live or Rs. 6 lacs p.a. Hence most Indian students aviod Germany unless they have a relative to stay with. As the cost of life alone over 7 years comes to Rs 40 lacs and hence it makes no economic sense to go there for MBBS.

7. There are many other destinations for Medical Education in the World – Romania; Georgia; Khazakastan; Belarus; Kyrgyz – all of which are are former USSR Countries and very likely you will find Indian students there.

Most International Colleges have appointed agents in India who arrange for Visa, airport pick up and admission to the College etc. Some of them offer good service and some of them offer poor service. So verify the credentials of the agent before signing up with one of them. 

Indian students going overseas should also visit the Medical Council of India (MCI) website – [url]www.mciindia.org[/url] and familiarize themselves with the relevant rules which are very simple.

ELIGIBLITY TO STDY MEDICINE: MCI has prescribed that if you want to study MBBS in India OR Overseas a student has to be minimum 17 years of age as on Dec. 31 of the year of Admission and pass in class 12 with 50% in PCB average and also pass in Physics; Chemistry, Biology and English individually in class 12 Board Examination.

CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY: If you want to do MBBS overseas- then you go to the MCI office in New Delhi and file for a Certificate of Eligibility in the prescribed form and prescribed fee and file your class 11 and 12th mark sheet.

COMPETENCY TEST: After you do MBBS overseas & return to India and – then you need to give a competency test also known as the MCI Screening test or the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) which is conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE) in New Delhi. If you pass this examination then you get registration with the MCI and you can practice in India. There is No limit on the number of attempts in this exam. There is approximately 70% pass rate in the last 2-3 years. Students who have cleared this examination have said that if you study in the medical college and also prepare for the test you can clear it in the 1st attempt. 

DOCTORS WORKING OVERSEAS: Students who have finished their MBBS in India or overseas can also go to many countries and practice there. There is apparently a demand for doctors in Rural Australia, Canada, Singapore and Gulf Countries. Each country has a competency test (similar to the MCI Screening Test) which you have to give. Previously many students were going to UK after PLAB - but the UK has changed its rules and now it is difficult to go there for PG or to get a working visa as they have an oversupply of doctors.

Cooking gas (LPG) price was on Saturday hiked by Rs 11.42 per cylinder following government decision to raise commission paid to the dealers.

Subsidised LPG in Delhi will now cost Rs 410.42 per cylinder, up from Rs 399. In Kolkata the new price is Rs 412.42, in Mumbai Rs 434.42 and in Chennai Rs 397.92.

Petrol and diesel prices too may go up marginally as the Oil Ministry considers raising dealers commission by at least 23 paisa and 10 paisa a litre respectively.

The ministry on Friday issued orders raising commission paid to LPG dealers from Rs 25.83 per 14.2-kg cylinder to Rs 37.25, government officials said.

The 44 per cent or Rs 11.42 per cylinder increase in the commission on the subsidised cooking fuel is being passed on to consumers, they said.

For the consumer, subsidised LPG in Delhi will now cost Rs 410.42 per cylinder, up from Rs 399.

The hike comes within weeks of the government deciding to restrict supply of subsidised cooking gas to 6 cylinders of 14.2-kg size per household in a year. The remaining supplies would have to be sourced at market rates.

Officials said the commission paid on market price or non-subsidised LPG too has been raised by Rs 12.17 to Rs 38 per cylinder. Accordingly, a non-subsidised LPG cylinder price will go up from Rs 883.5 to Rs 921.5.

A similar exercise is on to raise commission paid to petrol pump dealers on sale of petrol and diesel. The ministry is proposing to raise commission paid on petrol by 23 paisa to 1.72 and that on diesel by 10 paisa to Rs 1.01

But every day, these girls face real threats of violence. In the past year, there were more than 185 documented attacks on schools and hospitals, mainly attributed to armed factions opposed to educating girls and women.

But girls in Afghanistan keep going to school.
